Why fish oil, and Omega-3s – what’s that?

Many of us have heard of fish oil, Omega-3s, and healthy fats, but very few of us know about the actual benefits of making them a part of our diet. This blog is designed to give you a bit more information, so you may understand some of the qualities associated with consuming quality fish oils/Omega-3s that you’ll find in Nutra Summa’s Alaskan Fish Oil.

The term “healthy fats” to some, may sound like an oxymoron. Many of us; for most of our lives, have been trained to avoid fats because well, “fats make you fat”, or “I’m watching my cholesterol, so I need fat free products and so on. The list goes on, as to why we “should” avoid fats, but many are unaware of the value certain fats play in our lives, our bodies, and how they benefit our overall health. Certain fats are an essential part of our diet and help us absorb fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K).  Now, people are beginning to learn the value of going beyond the essential vitamin role and to seek out fats that help with overall health.

Omega-3 fatty acids serve a wide array of benefits, and while many versions of Omega-3’s are studied, EPA and DHA seem to show the greatest health benefit relative to their presence in healthy diets around the world. EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) have been connected to traditional Mediterranean and Alaskan food patterns. The fish oils are a source of EPA and DHA in these diets are associated with health when combined with the active lifestyles these people follow.  EPA and DHA affect some of the bodys conditions by encouraging a better response to inflammation in the body. These specific Omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, have also shown through supportive (but not conclusive) research that their intake within wise food choices may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. One serving of Nutra Summa’s Wild Alaskan Fish Oil provides 1000 mg of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids. [See nutrition information for total fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol content.]

On the path to finding the highest quality EPA and DHA, many people consider introducing fish and fish oil supplements into their diet. As people learn more about the values of fish, logical concerns about the source of these fish are growing. It is becoming common knowledge that some fish are farm raised, which in itself, leaves many with a whole new concern about the quality and safety of these sources. Many opinions of “fish farms” are of poorly nourished, and potentially unhealthy fish while there is controversy regarding the “facts” of this opinion, many still feel safer consuming fish and fish products, from a wild caught fishing source.

Nutra Summa prides itself on finding the best source of ingredients in all of our products, and our Alaskan Fish Oil is no exception. The following are some of the benefits of our Alaskan Fish Oil.
